Inclement Weather and Scheduled Meetings

We are entering the season of possibly school delays or cancellations due to weather.  If you have a meeting scheduled with us, please note the following:

-In the event of a two-hour delay, the meeting will be adjusted to reflect the teacher's altered planning period for the day.  We will call you around 9:30 am to confirm the new time based on our delayed schedule.

-In the event of a cancellation, the meeting will also be cancelled/postponed.  We will call you on our next day in session to reschedule.

Custody Disputes

According to Onsted Community Schools Board Policy 5230:

If one parent has been awarded custody of the student by the courts, the parent of custody shall provide the school with a copy of the custody order and inform the school in writing of any limitations in the rights of the non-custodial parent.  Absent such notice, the school will presume that the student may be released into the care of either parent.

Please note that legal guardianship is ascertained by documented proof upon enrollment.  This includes, but is not limited to, the student's birth certificate.  Please make sure that we have the most current legal documentation on file.

In Need of Some Assistance?

We have a few programs in place to help our families in need.  If your child needs a coat, boots, snow pants, hat, and/or gloves for winter, the Kiwanis Club of Onsted has donated many of the above.  They have also donated money to help us make purchases for similar items as needed.

The Taylor Marie Fisher Fund is in place to help students participate in sports or other various after-school activities.  The family of the late Taylor Marie Fisher, as well as several local groups such as the OHS soccer team, contribute to this fund  each year in order to provide these opportunities for our students.

If your family has a need, please contact Mrs. Upp.

Attendance Awareness

The Onsted Community School District is now following the new Lenawee County Attendance Policy.  Please be aware that there are some changes that may affect your child.  This policy is posted on the Attendance Policy tab.

It is the goal of the school to maximize the amount of learning time for each student, while they are in our care.  Chronic absenteeism (missing  10% of school time, or more) is a substantial predictor of negative outcomes, including lower math and reading abilities, lower test scores, and even increased dropout rate.  We ask for your cooperation in helping to ensure that your child does not fall into this category.

The following are things you can do to help:

1.Only allow your child to stay home if they are too sick to come.  Fever, vomiting, pink eye, or severe viral infections are cause to keep them home.  Complaints of headache or stomachache can be signs of anxiety, and should be communicated to the guidance office.  If your child has specific health concerns, let us know.

2. Have a plan, as well as a backup plan, to get your child to school on time, every day. Too often disruptions in the morning, or transportation issues, cause children to miss an entire day of school.

3. Plan family vacations on weekends or around school breaks. A one week vacation causes each student to miss approximately 35 hours of instruction.

4. If possible, schedule doctor and dentist appointments after school hours.

5. Use the Home Access Center to keep track of your child’s attendance. Chronic absenteeism means just missing two days per month, which, over the course of the school year, can equate to approximately 126 hours of learning.

6. Communicate with us. Many issues can be resolved by utilizing the appropriate resources and staff members. Remember, we want your children here.  We are here to help.

Attend today, achieve tomorrow.
